CULTURE: The Great Blue Hole of Belize

Blue Hole, Hoyo Azul, Great Blue Hole, Great Blue Cenote, are the names with which one is known to one of the best places to dive in the world.

It is a sink located 100 kilometers off the coast of Belize. The dimensions of this circular hole allude to its name, as it extends to more than 300 km wide and 122 meters deep.

This blue hole is exactly in the middle of the Lighthouse Reef, a small coral island. According to studies, the Great Blue Cenote was a cave.

During the last period of the Ice Age, the ice melted, sea level rose and flooded the cave, which caused the roof to collapse and gave rise to the blue hole; One of the largest global phenomena of its kind. In 1971, Jacques Cousteau, a French naval researcher, made an expedition to the Great Blue Hole, and declared it one of the best places to dive in the world.

Hoyo Azul is a popular tourist destination due to its crystalline waters and its diversity of marine species, such as giant fishes and Caribbean reef sharks. It usually takes a full day to visit the depths of the blue cenote. Besides the tourist destination, the Great Blue Hole is considered one of the World Heritage Sites declared by the UNESCO.
