The 88th Academy Awards were held tonight, February 28, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. Some aspects of this year’s awards were the same as usual, with reporters asking celebrities about who they were wearing and current projects they are working on. However, unlike any of the shows before, there was an elephant in the room: many prominent black celebrities chose to boycott the Oscars.
The issue started on January 14, the day Academy Award nominations were announced. Many people had an issue that the top four categories (Best Actor/Actress, Best Supporting Actor/Actress) had only white nominees, which also happened at the 87th Academy Awards. One of the most vocal couples regarding the lack of diversity were the Smith family, especially Jada. She posted a video to her Facebook page where she stated that she would boycott the Oscars.
